Nazare: Complete Travel Guide
Nazaré is a small fishing village on Portugal's Atlantic coast that became world-famous for one reason: the largest surfable waves ever recorded. In October 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara rode a 23-metre wave here — a world record. Since then, Nazaré has become a pilgrimage for surf and ocean lovers.
But Nazaré is more than giant waves. In summer, the calm village beach draws Portuguese families, the local fisherwomen still wear the traditional seven-skirt costume, and salt-dried fish hanging in the streets of the centre looks like a scene from another century. It's a fascinating contrast between the brutal winter ocean and the tranquil summer village.
