Nazaré is undoubtedly one of Portugal’s gems, a charming seaside village that preserves its traditions while captivating with its unique character. The Legend of Nazaré
Among the many fascinating stories surrounding Nazaré, the legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho stands out as a tale of faith and miracle passed down through generations.
It is said that on a foggy morning, Dom Fuas Roupinho, the mayor of Porto de Mós and a knight of King Afonso Henriques, was out hunting when he spotted a deer. Riding his horse at full speed, he pursued the animal, unaware that he was approaching the edge of a steep cliff.
Just as the fall seemed inevitable, Dom Fuas invoked Our Lady of Nazaré. Miraculously, his horse stopped abruptly at the cliff's edge, leaving hoof marks on the rock—marks that can still be seen today at Sítio da Nazaré. In gratitude for the miracle that saved his life, Dom Fuas ordered the construction of the Hermitage of Memory, a small sanctuary that remains a symbol of this legend.
This story, passed down through the ages, reinforces the deep connection between Nazaré and devotion to Our Lady, making it a destination of faith and tradition for visitors from around the world.
