How to Get to Nazaré
Nazaré is a coastal town in central Portugal, famous for its giant waves and traditional fishing culture. It doesn't have its own airport, so the best way to get there is from Lisbon or Porto.
From Lisbon (about 120 km)
- By car: The fastest option, taking about 1h30 via the A8 motorway. You can rent a car at Lisbon Airport for around €25-40/day.
- By bus (Rede Expressos): Direct buses from Lisbon's Sete Rios station to Nazaré, taking about 2 hours. Tickets cost around €12-15. Book on the official website.
- By train + bus: Take the train from Lisbon to Caldas da Rainha (about 2 hours), then a local bus to Nazaré (30 minutes). Not the most practical option but works if you prefer trains.
From Porto (about 240 km)
- By car: About 2h30 via the A1 motorway.
- By bus: Rede Expressos operates buses from Porto to Nazaré with a stop in Leiria. Total journey about 3-3.5 hours.
Getting around Nazaré
Nazaré is a small town that you can easily explore on foot. The main areas are:
- Praia (beach area): The lower part of town along the beach, where most restaurants and shops are.
- Sítio: The upper part of town on top of the cliff, accessible by the Funicular da Nazaré (€1.50 each way). This is where the famous viewpoint for the giant waves is located — the Farol da Nazaré.
- Pederneira: A hilltop village with panoramic views, reachable on foot or by local bus.
