Where to Eat in Venice
Venetian cuisine is all about fresh seafood, cicchetti (Venetian tapas), and hearty pasta dishes. The key is to avoid the tourist traps near San Marco and explore the neighborhoods where locals eat — especially Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello.
Typical dishes to try
- Cicchetti: Small bites served at bars — similar to Spanish tapas. Try baccalà mantecato (creamed codfish), sarde in saor (sardines in sweet and sour sauce), and polpette (meatballs).
- Risotto al nero di seppia: Black squid ink risotto, one of Venice's most iconic dishes.
- Spaghetti alle vongole: Spaghetti with fresh clams.
- Fegato alla veneziana: Venetian-style calf liver with onions, a traditional local specialty.
Recommended restaurants and bars
- Cantina Do Spade — A historic cicchetti bar near the Rialto Market, operating since 1488. Great for a quick and authentic Venetian snack with a glass of wine. Budget-friendly.
- Osteria Al Squero — A tiny bar in Dorsoduro facing a gondola boatyard. Excellent cicchetti at great prices, with a charming canal-side atmosphere.
- Trattoria alla Madonna — A classic seafood restaurant near the Rialto Bridge, popular with both locals and tourists since 1954. Try the fritto misto (mixed fried seafood). Mid-range prices.
- Osteria Bancogiro — Overlooking the Grand Canal at the Rialto Market. Creative Venetian cuisine with a modern twist and a stunning terrace. Mid to high-range.
- Al Covo — A refined restaurant in Castello known for its focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients and traditional Venetian recipes. Excellent wine list. Higher-end.
- Dal Zemei — A tiny cicchetti bar in San Polo with some of the best small bites in Venice. Perfect for a quick, cheap, and delicious lunch standing at the bar.
Tips
1. Eat standing at the bar (al banco) for cheaper prices — sitting at a table often adds a surcharge.
2. Visit the Rialto Market in the morning to see the fresh fish and produce that inspires Venetian cuisine.
3. Avoid restaurants with photos on the menu and people standing outside trying to lure you in — these are usually tourist traps with mediocre food.
