When to visit Zurich: Best time to travel

Switzerland in summer

Zurich has four distinct seasons, with cold and snowy winters and warm, sunny summers. Each season offers a different experience — and two of them have events that are worth planning your trip around.

Zurich weather: what to expect in each season

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures range between 5°C and 18°C, with increasingly longer and sunnier days. March can still have snow, but April and May are wonderful — flowers blooming along the lake, open terraces, and fewer tourists compared to summer. One of the best times to visit.

Summer (June to August)

Temperatures range between 18°C and 28°C, with long days and Lake Zurich turning into an urban beach — locals swim in the lake and the city's rivers as if it were completely normal (and it is). This is the busiest and most expensive season.

Highlight: The Zurich Street Parade takes place in August and is one of the largest electronic music festivals in the world, with more than one million people filling the streets. If you want to attend, book your accommodation several months in advance — the city gets completely packed during this weekend.

Autumn (September to November)

September still has pleasant weather (14°C–22°C) with significantly fewer tourists. October brings beautiful autumn colors to the parks and hills surrounding the lake. November becomes colder and greyer — but it is when the Christmas markets begin to appear.

Winter (December to February)

Temperatures range between -2°C and 5°C, with frequent snow that transforms the city. It is the most expensive season after summer due to nearby ski resorts and Christmas events.

Highlight: The Zurich Christmas markets are among the most beautiful in Europe — the one at Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) is set up inside the station itself, featuring a huge decorated Christmas tree in the center. The Niederdorf market in the Old Town has a unique medieval atmosphere. Both usually run from late November until Christmas.

Summary: which season should you choose?

  • Best balance: May and September — great weather, fewer tourists, lower prices
  • For the Street Parade: August — book accommodation 3+ months in advance
  • For Christmas markets: December — especially the first half of the month
  • For swimming in the lake: June to August
  • Cheapest months: March, April, and November
