Zurich 1-Day Itinerary: What to See and Do

Zurich captivated me with its perfect mix of modernity and tradition. Besides being Switzerland’s largest financial center, the city has a vibrant cultural side that is definitely worth exploring. Walking through the historic center, admiring Lake Zurich and the mountains surrounding the city left me amazed. Between renowned museums, theaters, galleries, and a gastronomy scene that ranges from sophisticated restaurants to cozy cafés, there is always something interesting to discover. In this 1-day itinerary, I share the places I enjoyed visiting the most, ensuring a complete and unforgettable experience.

What to do in Zurich in 1 day

Main attractions:

1. Old Botanic Garden: Located along the Limmat River, the Alter Botanischer Garten is one of Switzerland’s oldest botanical gardens, with a history dating back to 1837. The space houses a large collection of plants, including rare and exotic species. Its carefully designed layout includes the famous Palmenhaus, a greenhouse that recreates tropical climates and houses plants from tropical and subtropical regions. 2. Bahnhofstrasse: Considered one of the most luxurious shopping streets in the world, Bahnhofstrasse is the heart of Zurich’s high-end shopping district. Stretching for 1.4 km, the street connects Zurich’s main train station to Lake Zurich and is surrounded by luxury brands, prestigious Swiss watch stores, galleries, and charming cafés. Its combination of classical and modern architecture makes it one of the city’s most beautiful streets. During Christmas, Bahnhofstrasse becomes even more magical with its sparkling lights and festive decorations.

3. Augustinergasse (St. Augustine Lane): Located in Zurich’s old town, Augustinergasse is a charming medieval street filled with colorful houses and historic details. Walking through this street feels like traveling back in time, as many buildings still display signs showing the professions of their former residents, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval life. It is the perfect place for photography lovers and travelers who want to discover traditional and historic Zurich.

4. Lindenhof: The Lindenhof is one of Zurich’s most iconic viewpoints, offering an incredible panoramic view of the city and the Limmat River. This historic hill was once the site of a Roman fortress and is now surrounded by beautiful linden trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere in the heart of the city. Besides its stunning views, the location also has great historical importance, especially during the Protestant Reformation. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and even have a small picnic while overlooking Zurich.

5. Münsterbrücke Bridge: The Münsterbrücke is one of Zurich’s oldest and most picturesque bridges, crossing the Limmat River. The bridge offers beautiful views of two of the city’s most important landmarks: Fraumünster and Grossmünster. It is one of the best places to take panoramic photos, especially at sunset, when the churches are illuminated and reflected on the water. It is the perfect spot to capture the essence of Zurich.

6. Fraumünster (Church of Our Lady): Founded in the 9th century, Fraumünster is one of Zurich’s most important churches, famous for its stunning stained-glass windows created by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti. These colorful windows, depicting biblical scenes, are among the city’s main attractions. Visitors can also join guided tours to learn more about the fascinating history of the church and Zurich itself. It is a great opportunity to explore the religious and cultural heritage of the city. 7. Grossmünster (Great Minster): The Grossmünster is an iconic Romanesque church from the 12th century and one of Zurich’s most recognizable landmarks. Its twin towers dominate the city skyline, and the church has great historical importance, especially because of its central role in the Protestant Reformation led by Ulrich Zwingli. A visit to the church includes the possibility of climbing the tower, where visitors are rewarded with spectacular views over Zurich. Lindt Home of Chocolate in Zurich

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is a complete experience for chocolate lovers. Located in Kilchberg, just outside Zurich, this attraction combines an interactive museum, chocolate tastings, and one of the largest Lindt chocolate shops in the world.

What to expect:

• Chocolate Museum: Interactive exhibitions that tell the story of chocolate, from cocoa cultivation to the production process. The highlight is the impressive 9-meter-high Lindt chocolate fountain.
• Unlimited Chocolate Tasting: During the visit, visitors can stop at several tasting stations and try different types of Lindt chocolates.
• Chocolate Making Workshops: Participate in workshops where you can create your own chocolate. This is a separate paid activity and advance booking is recommended.
