When to visit Bern: Best time to travel

Bern has a continental alpine climate — cold snowy winters, pleasant summers, and beautiful spring and autumn seasons. The city has a human scale that makes it enjoyable all year round, but summer and December offer unique experiences worth considering.

Weather in Bern: what to expect in each season

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures range between 4°C and 18°C, with increasingly longer days. April and May are especially beautiful — spring flowers contrast with the medieval stone buildings of the historic center. It is one of the best times to walk through the arcades and explore the city without large crowds.

Summer (June to August)

Temperatures range between 17°C and 27°C, with very long days. It is the busiest season for visitors, but Bern never feels as crowded as Zurich or Lucerne.

Unique highlight: During summer, locals swim in the Aare River — they enter the water at the river beaches and let the current carry them through the city center. It is one of Switzerland's most authentic summer experiences, and visitors can join as well. The water is cold (12–18°C even in summer), but it is a traditional Bernese summer ritual.

Cultural highlight: The Gurten Festival takes place in July on Gurten Mountain, offering panoramic views of Bern and featuring some of Switzerland's most charming independent music performances.

Autumn (September to November)

September is excellent — temperatures range between 12°C and 22°C, with autumn colors on the surrounding hills, fewer tourists, and the historic center covered in a golden light that is perfect for photos. October becomes colder quickly, and November is already cold and gray.

Winter (December to February)

Temperatures range between -3°C and 5°C, with frequent snow transforming the medieval center into a postcard-like scene. It is the coldest and cheapest season (except December).

Highlight: The Christmas markets in Bern are among the most authentic in Switzerland — the ones at Münsterplatz (in front of the Gothic cathedral) and Waisenhausplatz have a genuine medieval atmosphere, with wooden stalls, spices, and glühwein. They usually run from late November until Christmas.
