Spring in Madrid — one of the best seasons to enjoy the city outdoors

One of the most common questions when planning a trip to Madrid is: What is the best time to visit the city?

The answer depends a lot on the type of experience you are looking for. Madrid has four well-defined seasons: pleasant springs with blooming parks, very hot and lively summers, autumns with perfect temperatures for walking, and cold winters with a special Christmas atmosphere.

We visited Madrid and can say: the city has a unique energy at any time of the year. The Spanish capital combines history, incredible museums, amazing food, and a strong street culture that changes completely with each season.

In this guide, we will show you what Madrid is like in each season, which events happen throughout the year, and which period to choose depending on the type of trip you are planning.

Madrid Weather: What to Expect in Each Season

Spring (March to May)

Spring is considered by many travelers the best time to visit Madrid. After winter, the city starts coming back to life, with pleasant temperatures, blooming parks, and an intense cultural calendar.

Temperatures usually range between 10°C and 22°C. March can still have colder days, but April and May usually offer perfect weather for walking around the city, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the many terraces spread throughout Madrid.

Retiro Park becomes especially beautiful during this season, with blooming trees, colorful gardens, and the famous Crystal Palace reflecting on the lake.

Another advantage of spring is that the city is not yet as crowded as during the peak summer months. Museums usually have shorter lines and accommodation prices tend to be more balanced.

Highlight: In May, Madrid hosts the Feria de San Isidro, one of the city's most traditional celebrations. The event brings together cultural performances, music, gastronomy, and different expressions of Madrid's local culture for several days.

Summer (June to August)

Summer in Madrid is intense. The city has a dry climate, and temperatures can easily range between 28°C and 38°C, especially during July and August.

The days are very long, with plenty of sunshine until late afternoon, and the city becomes full of tourists enjoying museums, restaurants, squares, and Madrid's vibrant nightlife.

The main downside is the heat. During the hottest months, walking around the city in the middle of the day can be exhausting, especially in open areas such as Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and around the Royal Palace.

If you travel during this period, our tip is to plan outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon, take your lunch break in air-conditioned places, and visit museums during the hottest hours of the day.

August is an interesting month in Madrid: many locals take their holidays and leave the city to travel. Because of this, some traditional restaurants and small businesses may temporarily close.

Highlight: In August, Madrid celebrates the Verbena de la Paloma, one of the city's most traditional neighborhood festivals. The event takes place mainly in the La Latina area, with music, dancing, traditional food, and street celebrations.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is one of our favorite seasons to visit European cities, and Madrid becomes especially pleasant during this period.

September still feels similar to summer, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. In October and November, the days become cooler, usually ranging between 10°C and 18°C.

It is an excellent time to explore Madrid on foot, visit museums more comfortably, and enjoy restaurants, markets, and historic neighborhoods without the intense crowds of summer.

The city's parks also become very beautiful during this season, especially Retiro Park, which gains autumn colors and a much calmer atmosphere.

Highlight: In October, Madrid hosts the Festival de Otoño de Madrid, a cultural event featuring theater, dance, and music performances by national and international artists.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Madrid is cold, but it can be a very interesting time to visit the city. Unlike many other European capitals, Madrid usually has many sunny days even during the colder months.

Temperatures usually range between 2°C and 10°C. Snow is rare, but it can happen in some years, creating a completely different landscape in the Spanish capital.

One of the biggest advantages of winter is that the city becomes much quieter. January and February are months with fewer tourists, which means less crowded museums, better accommodation prices, and a more relaxed experience.

In December, Madrid gains a special atmosphere with Christmas lights. Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, and the main shopping streets become decorated, creating one of the most beautiful periods to walk around the city at night.

Another special moment happens in January, when the city hosts the traditional Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos, one of the most important events on the Spanish calendar.

Highlight: December is a great choice for travelers who want to experience Madrid with a Christmas atmosphere. Besides the lights throughout the city, there are markets, performances, and special events during this period.
