Madrid impressed us from the very beginning. The capital of Spain is one of those cities with its own unique energy — from the busy streets of Gran Via to peaceful parks like Retiro, historic squares and restaurants where tapas seem endless. In just one day, we explored iconic landmarks, tried delicious traditional food and experienced the charm of the city. In this guide, we have gathered everything you need to know to make the most of Madrid.
What to expect from Madrid
Madrid is a city that surprises visitors by being both monumental and welcoming at the same time. Unlike Barcelona, which is famous for beach tourism and Gaudí's architecture, Madrid stands out for its culture, nightlife and gastronomy. It is a city made for walking — most of the main attractions are relatively close to each other, and the streets of the city center are an attraction themselves.
Madrid has a unique rhythm: Spaniards usually have lunch around 2 PM and dinner after 9 PM. Adapting to these schedules is part of the experience. The museums are world-class, especially the Prado Museum, the squares have an incredible atmosphere and the food scene goes far beyond tapas.
One important thing to know: Madrid can be extremely hot during summer (easily above 40°C) and quite cold during winter. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.
1-day itinerary in Madrid
With one day in Madrid, you can explore the heart of the city. This itinerary takes you through the most iconic landmarks in a logical geographical order — all walking distance. Reserve the entire day and wear comfortable shoes.
Itinerary summary
- Morning: Gran Via → Puerta del Sol → Plaza Mayor
- Afternoon: Almudena Cathedral → Royal Palace
- Late afternoon: Temple of Debod (sunset)
Morning
1. Gran Via
Start at the famous Gran Via, Madrid's most iconic avenue. With early 20th-century buildings, theaters, shops and a vibrant atmosphere, it is the beating heart of the city and the perfect starting point to explore the center. Walk slowly — the architecture here is impressive.
2. Puerta del Sol and Kilometer Zero
Just a few minutes from Gran Via, Puerta del Sol is the official starting point of all roads in Spain. Here you will find the famous Kilometer Zero, marked on the ground, and the statue of El Oso y el Madroño (the bear and the strawberry tree), the official symbol of Madrid. The square is always lively and is one of the most photographed places in the city.
3. Plaza Mayor
From Sol, walk to Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Surrounded by historic buildings with red façades and elegant arcades, it is the perfect place to sit at a café and enjoy the atmosphere. Do not leave without trying the famous bocadillo de calamares — the fried squid sandwich that is a true Madrid tradition.
Afternoon
4. Almudena Cathedral
Continue walking to Almudena Cathedral, located right next to the Royal Palace. The interior is surprising because of its modern and colorful style — very different from traditional Gothic cathedrals. If you have time, climb to the dome for a panoramic view of Madrid.
TIP: Admission is free! A great advantage for including it in your itinerary even if you have limited time.
5. Royal Palace of Madrid
Next to the cathedral is the Royal Palace, one of the grandest royal residences in Europe. Even if you do not enter (the interior visit takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes), the façade and gardens are already worth the stop. If you decide to visit inside, the luxurious rooms and impressive art collection are absolutely worth seeing. Get your Royal Palace ticket here.
TIP: Visit in the morning to avoid long lines, especially during high season.
Late afternoon
6. Temple of Debod
End your day at the Temple of Debod, an authentic Egyptian temple over 2,200 years old that was donated by Egypt to Spain in the 1960s. Besides being a unique historical attraction, the location offers one of the best sunset views in Madrid. Arrive early to secure a good spot — the view is worth every minute of waiting. Reserve your free ticket here.
TIP: Arrive in the late afternoon to watch the sunset. The view of the city from here is unforgettable.
Extra tips
If you have more than one day in Madrid, do not miss these places:
- Retiro Park: A green oasis in the center of the city, home to the Crystal Palace and the Great Lake, where you can rent boats. Perfect for relaxing and having a picnic.
- Prado Museum: One of the most important art museums in the world, featuring works by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco. Reserve at least 2 or 3 hours to visit it calmly.
- San Miguel Market: Located near Plaza Mayor, it is the perfect place to try different tapas and Spanish wines in a lively atmosphere.
- La Latina Neighborhood: The most charming neighborhood in Madrid for tapas and nightlife, especially on Sundays when El Rastro takes place, the city's famous flea market.
