ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new electronic authorization required for travelers from visa-exempt countries who wish to enter the European Union. Designed to enhance security and border control, ETIAS will function similarly to the U.S. ESTA, requiring online registration before travel.

New Update on ETIAS

ETIAS has generated many rumors this year, as, according to the official website, it was scheduled to launch in May 2025. However, a new update published on March 10, 2025, states that the launch has been postponed.

"ETIAS will begin operations in the last quarter of 2026. No action is required from travelers at this time. The European Union will announce the specific start date of ETIAS several months before its launch."

It is worth remembering that this is still a forecast, and further changes may occur. So let's talk a little about what ETIAS is and how it will change the way of entering Europe.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an electronic authorization that will be mandatory for travelers from countries that currently do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area. This area consists of 27 European countries that have abolished internal borders to allow free movement of people. Countries in the Schengen Area include France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

Created to enhance security and control of the European Union’s external borders, ETIAS will allow authorities to pre-screen travelers before their arrival in the continent. The goal is to identify potential risks and make travel safer without compromising the tourist experience.

Who Needs ETIAS?

Travelers from over 60 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and Japan, will need to obtain this authorization before entering Europe. ETIAS will be required for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, medical treatment, or transit within the Schengen Area.

This measure aims to improve security and border control, ensuring that visitors do not pose risks to the European Union. Even though it is a new requirement, ETIAS is not equivalent to a traditional visa, as its application process will be simple and fast.

How to Apply for ETIAS?

The ETIAS application process will be entirely online and can be completed in just a few minutes. Travelers will need to provide the following information in the form:

  • Personal details (name, date of birth, nationality, etc.).
  • Passport information (number, issue date, and validity).
  • Travel history and any previous stays in Europe.
  • Answers to security questions, including criminal background and involvement in illegal activities.

After submitting the form, most authorizations will be processed quickly, within minutes or hours. However, in some cases, the review may take a few days if additional information is needed.

What Will ETIAS Cost?

The ETIAS application fee will be approximately 7 euros. However, certain groups will be exempt:

  • Minors under 18 and seniors over 70 will be exempt from payment.
  • Family members of European Union or European Economic Area citizens may be exempt, depending on the situation.

The fee will be paid online using a credit or debit card. The document will be valid for three years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first.

With this authorization, traveling to Europe will remain a simple process but with increased control and security for everyone.

Final Thoughts

ETIAS will be an essential document for those wishing to travel to Europe without a visa. Despite the postponement to late 2026, it is important to stay updated and prepare in advance to avoid travel issues. As soon as new information becomes available, we will share it with you!

These are the latest updates from the official website. Since ETIAS is still over a year away from launching, further changes may occur.
