If you are planning a trip to Europe, it is important to understand the entry rules for the continent. Most European countries are part of the Schengen Area, an agreement that allows free movement of people between 27 nations without the need for passport control between them. However, to enter the Schengen Area, travelers must meet certain requirements.
Tourists from various countries, such as Brazil and the United States, can stay in Europe for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without the need for a visa. However, immigration authorities may request documents proving the purpose of the trip and the traveler's ability to support themselves during their stay. To ensure a smooth arrival, check the list of required documents below according to the Schengen Agreement rules for entering Europe.
Documents to Enter Europe
There are five mandatory documents for entry into Europe. In many cases, immigration officers do not ask for all of them, but that does not mean you can travel without them. If a document is requested and you cannot present it, there is a risk of being denied entry. Therefore, to ensure a smooth arrival, bring all required documents.
1. Passport
The passport is the most important document for those wishing to enter Europe. For countries that are part of the Schengen Area, it must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the continent. For example, if your trip is on June 1st and you plan to leave Europe on June 30th, your passport must be valid until at least September 30th. Additionally, it is essential that the passport is in good condition and has enough pages for immigration stamps.
2. Return Ticket
European authorities may request a return ticket or a departure ticket from the Schengen Area within the permitted tourist stay, which is up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This document serves as proof that the traveler does not intend to exceed the maximum allowed stay.
3. Financial Proof
Some countries require travelers to prove they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay. The necessary amount may vary depending on the destination country, but on average, it is expected that a tourist with a confirmed reservation already made has at least 80 euros per day. We know that each traveler has a different budget and may spend more or less, but this average amount of 80 euros makes it easier to prove that you can support yourself during your trip, avoiding problems.
The accepted documents for this proof include:
- Recent bank statements.
- International credit card with available credit limit. We use the Wise card, which works very well and has a good exchange rate. To get yours, just click here.
- Cash or traveler's checks.
The financial proof can be presented in euros or another currency, but it is expected that you already have some euros to spend during your stay.
4. Proof of Accommodation
Travelers must also present proof of where they will be staying during the trip. This document can be:
- Hotel or Airbnb reservation – You can easily obtain the proof through the platform's app where you made the reservation and even choose the language of the proof!
- If you are staying at a friend's or family member's house, you will need to present an Invitation Letter from a resident of the country, properly signed and, in some cases, notarized. Check the specific rules of the destination country. Since we live in Portugal, we will leave a simple example of an invitation letter that you can use, and our family has used it several times with success.
Example of Invitation Letter:
INVITATION LETTER - ACCOMMODATION
I, [Resident's Name], residing at [Resident's Address], NIF: [NIF Number], holder of Passport No. [Passport Number] issued on [Issue Date] and valid until [Expiration Date], phone number [Contact Number], issue this Term of Responsibility for [Visitor's Name], residing at [Visitor's Address], holder of Passport No. [Passport Number] issued on [Issue Date] and valid until [Expiration Date].
In this Term of Responsibility, I commit to receiving [Visitor's Name] at my residence from [Start Date] to [End Date]. I also assume responsibility for other expenses, such as food, as well as responsibility for any necessary expenses, such as their departure from the country.
Attached to this term is my document proving my legal status in Portugal.
I am available for any clarifications that may be needed.
[Location], [Date]
TIP: You should copy this example of the invitation letter into a text document, ask the person hosting you to fill it out and sign it. The signature can even be done online. Also, it’s a good idea for them to send a copy of their passport as well. It may seem like a lot, but from experience, in Portugal, they frequently ask for accommodation proof and verify everything carefully.
5. Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory for those planning to visit Schengen Area countries. The minimum coverage required is 30,000 euros for medical and hospital expenses. This insurance may also cover other unexpected events, such as flight cancellations, lost baggage, and legal assistance, ensuring more security for the traveler.
It is highly recommended to purchase insurance before the trip, as medical expenses in Europe can be high. To explore travel insurance options, visit: Find your Travel Insurance here.
ETIAS: New Requirement Starting 2026
Starting in late 2026, tourists from visa-exempt countries, such as Brazil and the United States, will need to obtain ETIAS authorization before traveling to Europe. This document will function as an electronic travel permit, similar to the ESTA for the United States. The application will be done online, with an estimated cost of 7 euros, and will be valid for three years.
The ETIAS is certainly something you don't need to worry about now, but if you're curious to know more, just click here and I’ll tell you everything!
Final Considerations
With the correct documentation, your entry into Europe will be smoother and free of surprises. Before the trip, always check the specific requirements of the destination country, as some rules may vary. Having the documents organized and updated avoids problems at immigration and allows you to enjoy your stay with more security and peace of mind.
If you are planning your trip, don't forget to verify all the requirements in advance and prepare the necessary documents to avoid setbacks.
