When to visit Porto: Best time to travel

Porto is a city that can be visited throughout the year — but June has an event that completely transforms the city and is worth planning your trip around. Here is what to expect in each season.

Spring (March to May)

One of the best times to visit Porto. Temperatures range between 12°C and 20°C, gardens are full of flowers, days become longer, and prices are still affordable before the high season. Rain can still happen in March and April, but showers are usually brief. Parks such as the Crystal Palace Gardens are especially beautiful during this time.

Summer (June to August)

High season, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C and many sunny days. It is the busiest time of the year, with higher accommodation prices — but also when the city's biggest celebration takes place.

Highlight: The São João Festival in Porto takes place on the night of June 23rd to 24th and is simply spectacular. The entire city goes out into the streets: bonfires, live music, fireworks over the Douro River, and the tradition of hitting people's heads with plastic hammers and leeks. It is chaotic, lively, and completely unique. If possible, plan your trip around this date.

Autumn (September to November)

September still feels like summer (18°C–24°C) with far fewer tourists and lower prices — making it one of the best times to visit. October and November bring the first rainy days and temperatures dropping to 12°C–18°C.

Highlight: September and October are the grape harvest season in the Douro Valley — when grapes are collected to produce the famous Port wine. It is worth taking a day trip from Porto to visit the Douro vineyards.

Cultural highlight: Fantasporto (Porto International Film Festival) takes place in October, focusing on fantasy and horror movies.

Winter (December to February)

Porto in winter is cool and humid — temperatures range between 5°C and 12°C, with frequent rain. However, the city is less crowded and offers a more authentic atmosphere. In December, the Porto Christmas Market at Alfândega is one of the best in Portugal, located in a historic warehouse on the banks of the Douro River.
