What to Try in Porto

Francesinha: Try this unique Porto specialty! The francesinha is a hearty sandwich, made with layers of various meats, melted cheese, and a rich beer-based sauce, usually topped with a fried egg. To accompany, order a portion of fries and a cold beer — the perfect combination for this comforting and flavorful dish.

Bacalhau à Brás: Cod is present in many Portuguese recipes, and Bacalhau à Brás is one of the most delicious. Made with shredded cod, fried potato matchsticks, scrambled eggs, and seasoned with onion, garlic, and parsley, this dish is light, flavorful, and perfect for those wanting to try one of the most cherished Portuguese specialties.

Porto Wine: No visit to Porto is complete without tasting the famous wine that bears the city's name. Rich, sweet, and full-bodied, Porto wine is known worldwide. There are various types, such as Ruby, Tawny, and White, each with its unique characteristics. For an even more special experience, visit one of the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and discover the entire production process of this iconic Portuguese wine. Our favorite is the Ruby Porto wine!

Wineries in the Douro Valley

Visiting the wineries of the Douro Valley is an essential experience for those wanting to explore the region's wine heritage and taste some of the best wines in Portugal.

Distance from Porto: The wineries in the Douro Valley are about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Porto. For those who prefer a worry-free trip, there are organized tours that include transportation and guided visits to the estates. Click here to learn more about the available tours.

Best time to visit: The harvest season (grape picking), between August and October, is particularly charming. During this period, the vineyards are filled with colors and activities, and many estates offer special events, such as grape stomping. However, spring (April to June) is also a great time to visit, with pleasant weather and blooming vineyards.

Our experience: We did the guided tour of the Douro Valley in February. Since it was off-season, we paid less than 70 euros each. We booked through the link we shared. If you'd like to see our full experience, we posted the video on YouTube. Watch the video below:
