Dress Code

When visiting the Vatican, it is important to follow the dress code for religious sites. Men and women should dress modestly when entering St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and other sacred areas. This means:

• Shoulders and knees must be covered (no shorts or skirts above the knee).
• Hats and sunglasses are not allowed inside buildings.
• Avoid wearing tank tops or sleeveless shirts.

There are strict dress codes, and visitors who do not comply may be denied entry, so make sure to dress appropriately!

When to See the Pope

If you want to see the Pope, the best opportunity is during the General Audience on Wednesdays. It usually takes place at 10:30 AM in St. Peter’s Square. To attend, you need a free ticket, which can be reserved in advance on the Vatican website or at the Vatican Pilgrims’ Office.

For those who prefer a more intimate experience, the Pope also gives his Sunday Blessing at noon on Sundays from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. This is a less formal occasion than the Wednesday audience but is still very special for visitors.
